If you've never been here, you must visit. (Just find a company that offers San Francisco tours. I'm sure you can find a good deal right now.) Pretty much everyone calls it the Rock. I bet you didn't know this, but <span style="font-style: italic;">alcatraz</span> is actually spanish for <span style="font-style: italic;">pelican</span>. Alcatraz was named the Island of the Pelicans. In the late 1800s, Alcatraz was a military fort and then it became a military prison. In fact, during WWI Alcatraz was the place where conscientious objectors were sent. In August of 1934, Alcatraz was acquired by the Dept. of Justice and subsequently turned into a federal prison.
